Description
From October 2015 to October 2016, about 20 university educators from five different institutions as well as representatives of NGOs that deal with higher education, took part in the first round of ELTT professional training programme.
ELTT is provided by the Sustainability Team of the University of Zurich (UZH) targeting university educators, to support capacity building for leadership in higher education for sustainable development (ESD).
Approach: In ELTT, participants are provided a set of methodological approaches which complement each other and provide interactive, intercultural and interdisciplinary exchange on higher ESD. Online webinars actively involve international experts in the field of higher ESD. Webinar speakers came from UNESCO in Paris, UNEP in Nairobi, universities or NGOs in S-Africa, Egypt, USA, Switzerland or Germany. Eight workshops enabled peer learning, hands-on experience and active exchange among practitioners. Thematic handouts provided theoretical input to systematically understand and learn about the role and potentials of higher ESD.
Webinars and handouts are still available and are ready to be shared in collaboration with the COPERNICUS Alliance – the European Network on Higher Education for Sustainable Development and the International Association of Universities. The online platform on higher ESD - http://www.iau-hesd.net gathers all materials and provides open source access. Consequently institutions from around the world can use materials to adapt them into their context and provide similar workshops.
A LinkedIn Group of ELTT brings together participants from around the world that have worked with ELTT materials.
Completing the professional development programme, participants:
* have gained competences for embedding Sustainable Development within their specific study courses and institutional environment.
* became part of an international network of peers allowing for continuing exchange and capacity building within an international community.
Partners: The programme was offered by the Sustainability Team of UZH in collaboration with the UZH Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Economics, Business Administration and Information Technology. The following international partner organisations support the project with their expert input and provide a platform with some hundred universities that are eager to exchange experience on higher ESD:
COPERNICUS Alliance – European Network on Higher Education for Sustainable Development
IAU – The International Association of Universities
GUPES – UNEP: Global University Partnership for Environment and Sustainability
United Nations University – Institute for the Advanced Studies of Sustainability (Global RCE Service Centre)
